What shall I write about?

This is a common question that I hear at The Blogger’s Cafe.

Imagine this. You are a 12 year old student who has been blogging for a couple of years, you have received lots of visits and quite a few comments. You’ve been busy at school and don’t seem to find time to blog anymore. What will happen when you go to high school? You will be even busier. What will happen to your blog then?

Your teacher has challenged you to blog more often. The problem you have is that you just don’t know what to write about that will be interesting to others and show something that is unique about you.

How do you decide what to write about? What has worked best for you? How do you get your visitors to leave a comment rather than just flit past your blog on the way to somewhere else?

Please share your ideas, we will all be happy to hear from you.

    Hi All,

I blog quite regularly but I would like to be able to think of things to write about easily!

Sometimes I just write about something (it doesn’t have to be the most interesting thing in the world) that happened during my week at school, at home or somewhere in between.

Another fun thing to do is to create a survey on a free website like poll daddy or survey monkey! (I find poll daddy easier to use) I recently posted a survey on my blog called Everything Imaginable, and as you can probably guess, it was about really random things like…

What’s your made up name? What are your favourite animals? What’s something funny that happened to you recently? It’s a really fun and interesting thing to do.

Now, this one is really quite strange, but the other day I was doing a discussion test and we were allowed to search the internet for evidence. So I was looking at a website from some sort of newspaper, so I read this article and found it really interesting. So I wrote a sticky note to remind me to put it on my blog! It’s strange but really easy!

Another really good thing to do if you can’t think of anything to write about is…

    Make a new page!!

Don’t just write posts, make your blog have loads of different pages of completely different things! You could have a page for photos, videos, stories, recipes, jokes, good movies or books, you’re favourite things to do or even how to write a good comment!

One more thing that I want to share with you is that you could make something! Like a screenr, where you can record your screen and talk as well. You could draw something and scan it and post it. You could even make a trailer off iMovie or some other type of program!

Last but not least, you could hold a competition! May it be the best story, or the best drawing, or the best recipe or the most creative word! You are the decider!

So know that I have given you all these ideas! You have no excuses! In fact I’m going to go and put this on my blog!

    Thanks
    Tess. D

    My blogging rules:
    1. I would suggest writing about you. It’s your blog, your life and you’re most likely going to enjoy blogging if you know what you’re writing about. Take me, for example. I love books. I love reading. I like writing. Guess what I would write about? Books, reading and writing.
    2. Be the most creative you can be. People are attracted to interesting posts! Hence, the adjective!
    3. Use a picture as a stimulus. Find an interesting picture and write a post about it. It could even be a story.
    4. If you can’t think of anything, find some inspiration! Ask your teacher, mum, dad, sibling! When I haven’t written anything for a long time and can’t think of anything, I’ll just go to my bookshelf, pull out the first favourite I see and write a post on it.
    5. Blog about something you have done recently. Whether it’s what you did on the weekend or at school today, if you put it out in the right way, people will want to hear you!

    Hi everyone

I love to blog and to find new posts I need inspiration.

To write a good post I sometime go outside and look at the clouds and then imagine what the clouds look like and then they sometimes give me a idea for a post.

Another one is that I Look on You Tube at the most viewed and then I sometimes write a post on one of the videos like the time the man Sky dived out of space!

One more is that you could write about your everyday life. What your weekend was like or what you did on the holidays. What the craze is at the moment.

    Hey.
I think that to find something interesting to blog about you have to do something interesting. Or you could give research on something that you love. For example you could borrow an encyclopedia from the library and write about what it says there.
As for getting comments I usually visit a whole lot of other blogs and leave a long interesting comment and then leave my URL at the end.
    Thanks for reading Alex.

    Hi everybody!

First of all, I absolutely love blogging and I wouldn’t like it if I found out I wouldn’t have enough time to do it as I get older. I’m really glad I was introduced to it because I have learned so much!

Next year, just like Cat, Esha and Liana, I am going into High School next year!! I’m not that worried about it (….just a little bit) but I will know what I will do to make sure I keep on blogging even though I will have a load of homework probably almost everyday.

    Here’s my answers!!

What will happen when you go to high school?

I would try my best to blog at least on the weekends or at the library at lunchtimes.

You will be even busier. What will happen to your blog then?

I might get some of my siblings to carry on with my blog if they aren’t too busy themselves.

How do you decide what to write about?

i would write about sporting matches, important events that are happening in the public, what I’ve learned, and maybe a couple of the stories I have written.

How do you get your visitors to leave a comment rather than just flit past your blog on the way to somewhere else?

I would try to write posts where they can comment and that are interesting about them, like maybe stories where they can decide on the ending to them. Or something else that makes them want to comment

I will definitely try my best to keep my blog active for next year :)
    Keep blogging!

Hi Mrs Thomas and Bloggers Cafe,
This is a perfect post for me because I am a 12 Year old student that has had a blog for a couple of years and I have had a few visitors and comments!

A suggestion from me is to join up to a challenge such as The Student Blogging Challenge. Each week they give you new challenges which you can write posts about. This week it is what you are passionate about. It could be many different things as you would probably know! You can also write about online scince games this week for the challenge.

Another challenge that I could suggest would have to be the 100 Word Challenge. In Year 6, this task is compulsory. Each week they give you a 5 word prompt and you have to write no more than 100 words using this prompt. I find that it is actually really fun to do. After that you can comment on other students that are taking part in the challenge and get them to visit your blog.

If you are stuck for things to write about, one of my tricks is to upload some work samples. If in class we have been studying about how to write an exposition then I could upload that work sample onto my blog, and get other peoples opinions. You could do this with maths problems as well.

Another idea is to write about what is going on in your life. You could have a post about a fundraising day you have done at school, which I have done here… http://dawsosblog.edublogs.org/2012/09/21/franklin-fundraiser/
You could write about what you have done recently, for me I could write about debating and if we have won or lost and what the topic was.

You could also write about yourself. You could tell people what your favourite food is, what your favourite sport is, you could tell them about your family and where you live- Never say too much about where you live, as this is being uncyber smart which is always dangerous!

You can write about what your are passionate about. If you are passionate about recycling, tell your viewers. Get them passionate too!

You could tell your followers about recent blogs that you have visited and commented on.

I really can’t tell you what to write a post on, because a blog has to be unique. But maybe some of these suggestions have given you a few ideas…

    Hi Everybody,

What works best for me is that I go through everything that I have done recently that should be interesting for other people to read about. For example, I went to the museum and learnt about lots of different things and if I haven’t written anything for weeks that’s what I could write about.

Another good thing to write about is perhaps a movie that you have watched , review it and post the trailer of it. Other people could read that review and consider watching the movie.

On my blog I have taken pictures of things I’ve drawn and put them on my blog because I truly love art.

Also what seems to get a lot of comments is to do the 100 word challenge. They are a lot of fun and readers seem to enjoy them.

If you have learnt a new hobby put it on the blog, its always fun to read what people are getting up to.

Post a picture of your pet – everybody loves animals!

I hope these tips will help you when you get writer’s block! :)

    Hi Everyone,
At first when I saw this post, I thought that I could never find an answer. But when I stopped and thought about it, I came up with a few answers that I think may help people if they have a mental blank.

How do you decide what to write about?
First of all, I would never write a post asking the readers of my blog what I should write. It isn’t very interesting and well, it’s your blog – why should anyone else tell you what to do on it? So I go back to the very first post I wrote. On most first posts, bloggers state what they will write on their blog. Most blogs I’ve visited (including mine) don’t really stick to what their first post says. They write about things that are totally different. But if you’ve looked at your first post and still have no ideas, think about what’s happening in your life. Are you currently doing a really hard project? Have you discovered a new colour by messing around with paint? Have you read a good book recently? If you think like that, It’s 99.9% that you will then find an idea for your posts. What has worked best for you? I love to write, so I started a story that the readers can choose what happens next. I got this idea from http://story.heathfieldcps.net/ . So I get a lot of my ideas from looking at other blogs. How do you get your visitors to leave a comment rather than just flit past your blog on the way to somewhere else? I add a question to the end of a lot of my posts, so that readers will comment on my blog. I normally know if someone has visited my blog, because of my Traffic Feed which tells me if someone has come onto my blog.
And I try to write more interesting posts so that I can get more comments.

    Hi!

I love to blog and the first tip about blogging that I have (not about ideas for posts) is to write regularly. That way more people will be interested in your blog and visit more often. But, that’s not the question. The questions were:

How do you decide what to write about? What has worked best for you? How do you get your visitors to leave a comment rather than just flit past your blog on the way to somewhere else?

    So, I will answer them!

How do I decide what to write about?

Well, that is a very hard question. Most of the time I’m thinking about writing a post, I go around asking everyone, “What should I write a post about?”. Sometimes this works, sometimes is doesn’t. In the case that it doesn’t, I stop for a while and think, ‘Are there any recent events I have heard about?’ or ‘Anything interesting that’s happened at school lately?’. Sometimes that works but most of the time I just start writing, and ideas start flowing into my head. Sometimes, I write down a completely random title of the post (e.g. Half a million apples) and let my readers comment and decide what the post should be about.

What has worked best for me?

For me, the thing that has worked best (in terms of most comments) is a list. This list was 50 places to visit before you die, which I got 60 comments on! Also, I find questions work well, or anything that encourages the reader to actually get involved in a challenge or something along the lines of that. In terms of ideas for posts, I think writing down something random or just searching something up on the web has worked the best for me!

How do you get your visitors to leave a comment rather than just flit past your blog on the way to somewhere else?

Like I said earlier, I find posing a question or something that involves the reader are a good way to get your visitors to leave a comment, because there is something they can answer or get imaginative about. Also, I think a catchy or mysterious title helps make your readers actually read the post, and hopefully comment!

Well, I hoped I helped everyone who is stuck for ideas or how to get comments on their blog!

    Esha :)

    Hi everyone,
I have always thought about what I should write about to make a good, interesting blog post and more than once I have not been able to do so and left it there.

Firstly you could write about something that you did on the weekend (like Cat said), but if you didn’t do anything you could plan your next weekend. This could lead into a whole section of posts: first planning, then explaining how it all went!

Some ideas for something interesting to do on the weekend (or even after school) are:

    1. You could paint something. Even if you aren’t the best artist you could include how you tried hard and you were glad with your efforts, or you are happy with it anyway.

    2. Take a few pictures to put on your blog.
Everyone loves pictures and it could be just the thing that draws attention to your blog (in a good way)! Try and make them interesting and maybe funny.

    3. Be creative and write a short and silly story. Not only are they funny but they are easy too! You can ask a family member or a friend to give you a wacky topic, if nothing comes to your mind!

    4. What has been happening? You may not know it, but your readers don’t know everything that happens in your life.(remember not to include too much personal information for safety reasons)You might be moving house, thinking of getting a new pet, anything will interest your readers.

    5. Do a good deed for the day. A good message in your post can encourage others to do the same. Set the example by telling them something good you did for someone today.

So now you have an exciting weekend/afternoon but what do you if you are at bloggers cafe, unable to do these? Easy. Search the internet for funny pictures, new music videos, yummy recipes or even a good joke. A really cool site you could visit is called wacky web tales! You can explore all sorts of wacky stories that are just the thing to post. Have a look here: http://www.eduplace.com/tales/

So now I hope you have got heaps of ideas and you will be able to write a bunch of posts from my ideas.

Hi everyone even though I am going to high school next year I hope that I still blog a lot though!
When I want to write a post I ALWAYS wonder what i should write about! To help me write a good post I think about what I did on the weekend!

BUT! Sometimes I didn’t do anything on the weekend!! Sooo… I think about a book I have recently read or have read before! That always works because you would of had to of read at least 3 different books in your life!

BUT!! What if you have already made posts on good books? Well you do a post on what you are doing in the holidays! There is ALWAYS something about those you can talk about because even you are not going anywhere…YOU CAN STILL HAVE HEAPS OF FUN!

But if you don’t really want to write a post on any of these things then you could always post a recipe of something yummy that you have made in the past or are going to make!

I hope that I have helped quite a lot of people,on what to write in a blog post!

    Cat :)
